Clothing Options: Preparing For Your Photo Shoot

WHAT TO WEAR: PREPARING FOR YOUR PHOTO SHOOT

As a professional photographer, it is our job to provide ideas on what clothes to bring to your photo shoot.

First rule, choose 4 clothing options that you love. Your portraits should be a reflection of you, just more polished. Think of those special pieces you might not wear often because they’re impractical for day-to-day use, or that go-to blouse you always wear on special occasions.

Here are some general clothing options:

Option One: Dark colored outfit or top.  Something strong, bold or structured. Black, Navy or Charcoal are great color choices.

Option Two: Light colored outfit or top. Something soft, gauzy, maybe even layered and sheer. White, Cream, Nude, or Light Pink.

Option Three: Something Fun. This outfit is your chance to really show your personal style. If you're conservative, step outside your box and be more liberal.

Option Four: This choice is completely up to you. Many clients opt for swimwear or something sexy, elegant & sophisticated.

When choosing your clothing options, always consider the necklines. Whatever you choose, make it interesting. If you love turtlenecks, go for it! Feel free to bring whatever calls to you. Remember, mixing up the necklines will add variety to your shots.

Avoid prints and patterns. Clothing that is too "busy" can are distracting. The focus should be on you, and even the most beautiful print will steal attention away from your face.

Fit Your Form. Fitted clothing that shows your shape work best for photographs. Leave your oversized or billowy blouses at home.  That also means anything with batwing sleeves. While these clothing options might be flattering in person, they often make you look larger on camera. This rule applies to any body type. Choose outfits that will hug your body, especially your waist, hips, arms, and chest.

Forget Shoes. Unless you have a special pair you’re dying to photograph, there’s really no need to worry about what shoes you’ll wear. Most images won’t show your feet at all, and if some do, bare feet will add an organic feel to your portraits.
